A farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care, who trims and balances a horse's hooves so that its shoes fit. A farrier uses blacksmith's skills (fabricating, adapting, and adjusting metal shoes) with some veterinary medicine (knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb) to address the care of the horse's feet.
A veterinarian, often shortened to vet, is a physician (doctor) for animals and a practitioner of veterinary medicine.
